ODP .Net Vs. Instant Client

Hi all,
Can anyone help clear up some confusion I have over ODP.Net and Oracle Instant Client ? Are they distinct products ? Can they (or Do they) have to be used together ? What are the main differences between the two ?

The reason for asking is that we are testing an application which is using Instant Client to connect to the backend Oracle database, yet a lot of people around the project are talking about the client application using ODP .Net
