ocssd and RDBMS/ASM endpoint discovery

Hi,

Just wanted to know what is this RDBMS endpoint discovery ( as performed by ocssd ) how is it done and why is it necessary.

Couldn't find anything useful anywhere.Any insights/pointers/links/docs into this aspect of ocssd functionality would be greatly appreciated.
