NUMBER data type and storage used

tx103108Apr 24 2009 — edited Apr 26 2009
For a column defined as a NUMBER - which defaults to the value of 38 digits - if you insert a number that is 6 digits long, does Oracle store/use only enough space to store the 6 digits or does it use the entire 38 digits, effectively storing leading 0's?

Thx
