NOt able to run java program

Hi,
I am not able to run java programs through command prompt. I have develop all folders needed and even set the environment variable : variable as javac and value as c:\Program Files\java\jdk1.6.0_04\bin
Can you please tell me where i am wrong and step by step procedure to run a java program on command prompt.
