NOP instruction

Please, can anybody explain me why JVM puts NOP instructions in bytecode? I was thinking it is for time delaying in programs which operate with hardware (read or write memory and registers), but it seems it is not. This is very important thing because of removing NOP instructions in Java bytecode.
