No Response from the Secure Global Desktop Client

(long stack trace cut for sanity)
Users are mostly on IE7 running the latest version of the 1.6 JDK (update 3 as of this writing).
We are using 4.40.917 (which supports IE7 and vista and everything else... in theory)
The app mostly works on older (IE6) and firefox browsers, but a lot of users have 'upgraded' to either vista or didnt notice and installed IE7. Walking them through the client install is not always an option (bit it is sometimes, depending on the user)
Users who first hit the site via IE7 and then try firefox also report the same issue.
We see the SGD client icon appear in the status area, but they just dont talk to each other for some reason. Some users have added the sgd server to the 'trusted sites' list, but to no avail.
Anybody else seeing this?
