Newbie Question - Server Name

756035Feb 24 2010 — edited Feb 25 2010
Hi,

I've recently started using SQL Developer and SQL Plus. I have been given a number of Oracle data source names, usernames and passwords to use.

With SQL Plus, connecting to these data sources has been easy, as putting the data source name in the host string box allows me to connect with the supplied credentials.

SQL Developer has not been so straightforward. I've have tried various combinations of host details on the connection screen with no success. An Oracle DBA here assisted with one connection by providing details for the tnsname.ora file. It seems the key additional piece of information required for this log entry is the server name, but I haven't been able to work out how to make the jump from data source name to server name.

My company does have an LDAP server lookup, but the servers I'm trying to connect to aren't on the list.

I've been trying to find out how SQL Plus manages to connect with the data source name only. Can anyone assist please?

Thanks
Jim
