New version of JRE

Hello,

I'm a studnet in university and we study JAVA. I was adviced a month and half to download JRE 6.0 for my computers.I just formatted my pc computer. Before formatting, I had Java run enviornment 6.0 on my computer with eclipse version 3.2.2. Now that I have formatted my computer which version should I download for my computer? I have windows XP professtional servicae pack?

Does the version jdk 6u1 fit the standard of the oldest version I was advised to download?
