NEW INSTALL USING J2SE 1.41 ON XP PRO, SYSTEM RUNS SLOW AND JITTERY

I am not a computer guru only a user. I just upgraded to XP Professional and one of the services I use on the web needed J2SE 1.41 to run. The install went fine. When I am using this service my whole system slows down to a crawl and screen is jittery. I have a 1.33 ghz processor and 256 meg ddr memory, so I don't think horsepower is the problem. Someone please help.
