Need your expert advice on change of entire SAN device !!!
Subject: Change of entire SAN device
Environment:
3-Node Oracle 10g RAC on ASM .
OS: Windows 2003 Server 64-bit
Oracle Version : 10.2.0.4
Scenario:
Our client is using NetApp filer for storing data, not only for the database but for the entire enterprise data.
Now the challenge is that the storage is nearing full capacity and the model of the NetApp which they are using cannot be tiered according to the hardware support.
(That is what we were informed by the client)
Hence they are planning to replace the current model of the storage with another model which has tiering capability.
For replacement, they need to copy all the data from the existing storage to the new one.
They are planning to replicate the storage data to the new storage using block level replication in the storage level.
My doubt is whether this strategy will work for the database which is residing in ASM and the OCR & VD also which is also in the SAN.
Plan:
(Backups of OCR, VD and database will be taken before proceeding in case if there is a need to restore if the below strategy fails).
1. Replicate all the partitions/disks allocated from the current storage to the new storage with exactly same LUN numbers. This operation will be online, ie while the RAC database is operational.
2. Complete shutdown of DB, ASM and CRS.
3. Incrementally update the latest changes in the storage during the downtime.
4. Disconnect the current storage from the database nodes.
5. Connect and present the new storage to the database servers.
6. Start Oracle in the database nodes.
My doubt is whether the database nodes will be able to identify the OCR and VD and also the ASM drives so that everything goes well smoothly ?
Will the storage replication be able to recognize the file system types also from the source storage device?
Will Oracle CRS be able to recognize the OCR and VD, if yes then whether the database instance and ASM will be able to identify the ASM diskgroups and function as normal?
I need your expert advice in this regard.
Thanks in advance for all your helps....

Mahesh.
