MXF Files

Im new to programming (sorry in advance!).

I wish to create a GUI probably using Java Desktop Application, which can make MXF (Material eXchange Format) files.
And also another program that can read from (not unpack) these files.

Will this be an incredibly difficult project?
And also could you possibly cive some constructive input?
