multiplexing control file

415008May 3 2004 — edited May 6 2004
I'm new at dba field .I'm trying to copy a controlfile from c drive to another drive .I've read that I should shutdown the database first then copy that file to other drive then restart after that I should modify the control_file entry in the parameter file finally i should startup the database again. Is it right?
I did these steps .I have oracle directory at c drive but i don't have it at d drive where I've copied the control file .
So my question should i have oracle drive at the other drive? If yes why? I don't need to create another database i want just to copy this control file to .Because when i verified from v$controlfile view the copied file doesn't exists there.

Any explanation would be thankful
