Multiple versions of Java

I have multiple versions of Java on my computer and I'd like to delete all except the most recent. Aside from realizing that Java is needed for a myriad of programs that require it, I know next to nothing about Java. However, I'm presuming that the older versions are just not used or needed so deletion of the folders containing those older versions would be OK. Am I correct?
