Migrate Oracle db to new hardware and keep original hostname/ip after switchover

user503856Jun 4 2015 — edited Jun 4 2015

Hi folks,

We need to upgrade our hardware and would like when all is said and done for the new system to have the same hostname/ip as the original. This will eliminate having to change firewall rules, db links, tnsnames, etc. Our servers are RHEL and db is at Oracle 11.2.0.3.

Full disclosure: I'm not a sysadmin or DBA but trying to do research on the topic to explore alternatives for our operations team.

Is there a best practice for migrating to new hardware (same OS, same db version), with the new server ending up having the same hostname/ip as the original? I see plenty of discussions about migrating a db to a new server but most are changing the hostname/ip in the process.

Once the db is migrated to the new server, and the old server has been turned off, can we change the hostname/ip of the server as long as we make the necessary changes to Oracle's configuration files (as described here: https://support.oracle.com/epmos/faces/DocumentDisplay?id=363609.1).

Thanks for the help,

Tim
