Migrate DB by moving physical files

Guilherme MesquitaNov 25 2014 — edited Nov 26 2014

Good evening!

We have a business need, which consists of moving some internal databases to recently staged server, and for that purpose, the manager has given the instructions:

- Install oracle software on the target server.

- shutdown current prod instance.

- Move all files, following the correct file structure (OFA/ OMF).

- Startup the instances.

I will do it for testing on my home environment, at the meantime I'm trying to research for the procedure, but can't seem to find the correct nomenclature (english is not my native language), so I tried looking for database migration by moving physical files and etc. No specific links so far.

1 - Is that a good migration method?

2 - What precautions should I take?

3 - Oracle recommends that kind of migration?

Any thoughts on this matter will be helpful.
