Merge - updating same column as merging on?

Hi,

We wish to update records.

Oracle 11.2.0.3

Key is

customer

grade

effective_date

table is

customer

grade

various other attributes

effective_date

expiration_date

They can change the effective_date on the records

e.g may have future record effective_date in future but want to change this.

e.g cust 100 grade A, effective 10/02/2014 but they make chaneg to this to be 11/02/2014

What is best way to handled this?

Cannot merge to upadet column if matching on it.
