Max Length of Text Item

I'd like to control the max length property programmatically but
can't seem to find a method.I tried SET_ITEM_PROPERTY for the
format mask which the help said would increase the length of max
length if format mask was longer, this did not work, seems there
is no way to change the input length a user can put characters
into a text item.Any suggestions would be great,thanks.
