Max connections from SQLPLUS to a non-SQL DB

Does anyone know of a setting that needs to be adjusted to stop a number of SQL-PLUS sessions reaching the maximum allowed, which by the way is set to 10, where as my non-DB system, can allow up to 50 concurrent connections.
