Mapviewer: Transparent image area style gif

I am using Java addImageAreaStyleFromURL with a transparent .gif but it shows a black background in Mapviewer. Is a transparent .gif not supported?
It works for markers, why not image area's?
Otherwise I cannot see another way to add area's with a pattern and a transparent background.

With addColorStyle I cannot add patterns. It is also not possible to set the strokeWidth with that function.
