Apparently, the installation process assumes a networked environment. I do have a home network and a broadband internet connection, but I just want to set up the database to work on my machine alone. I don't want it talking to the world.
With Oracle7 or Oracle8, SQL*Net or Net8 was not needed if you were sitting at the computer on which the database is running. I believe that SQL*Plus used ORACLE_SID to find the database. Does this work the same for 9i? I can't find where in the manuals this topic is discussed.
My problem is I know nothing about Oracle HTTP, Apache, etc., and I am overwhelmed. I would just like to get the database working in a basic mode and then expand from there. Instead, I got this installation program starting all kinds of processes that want to talk to other computers and my firewall will not let that happen. And I don't want that to happen.
The first time I turned on my computer after installing Oracle, I got a warning dialog having something to do with Apache. I don't WANT ANYTHING starting up automatically. How do I disable/kill/stop/amputate these daemons?
For now, I only want to be able to use SQL*Plus to start, access, and stop the database. All these other bells and whissles might be nice once I fig[i]
