Managers are receiving error when trying to enter Performance Document

We rolled out some features of Performance Management last year on PeopleSoft HCM 9.1. With the upgrade to 9.2, the Performance Document page displays within a workcenter. Users this week started reporting sporadic issues of receiving a nasty error and can't move forward. Some are navigating via a Portal workcenter and others are navigating through breadcrumbs:
Manager Self Service > Performance Management > Performance Documents > Current Documents>Click on a Document.
Our tech sleuths have found that in some cases the user’s session splits to two servers. The left side workcenter bar on one server and the right side page in another server. Other times, it works just fine. When a user is affected, this appears in all browsers even after they clear cache.

The global variable for Appraisal ID is set to null. It could be due to the improper use of the system. Please try again using the menu navigation or contact the system administrator.
