Looking for a good Java teaching book

Hi, I'm very new to Java, just taking Computer Science I in high school, but I have a bit more experience in Objective-C. I know that when I started learning that a book was recommended to me by other developers, "Programming in Objective-C" by Stephen Kochan. They told me that this was my basic manual for learning Objective-C and any developer should have it.

I've explained all of this because now I am searching for it's Java equivalent. My girlfriend is well-versed in web design (HTML, CSS, etc.) and would very much like to get into Java programming also. And as I was wondering what to get her for Christmas this idea came to me and I really think she would like it.

So, any help out there for a guy with a girlfriend in touch with her geeky side? It doesn't even have to be one book, could be a couple, I'm just looking for something that starts with the basics and is nearly universally acknowledged as a good starting point. Thanks for any recommendations.
