Login user name Display

Hi,
I am using SSO login authentication in my application. as the sso user name take the complete email address along with the domain name (like maik.david@yahoo.com)
I want to display the loged in user name without the domain name on the navigation bar(which will be displayed next to logout link).
I am using the built in 'SAND' theme.
please provide some information on how to change the display name of logged in user and also how to diaplay the logged in user name condetionally.
