log file sync / log file parallel write: difference?

Can anyone explain the difference between the log file sync and log file parallel write events?

The textual descriptions in the Oracle documentation are maddeningly similar:

When I graph the two events side by side they line up pretty closely, but sometimes the TIME_WAITED_MICRO deltas are vastly different so I wonder just what the two events are measuring differently.
