Log file size - how to determine

I have a question about log file sizes. Our log file size is set to 10m and we have 3 or 4 log groups running in archive log mode. I'm concerned that the log file size is too large; there are a ton of archive log files every day.
What's the best way to determine the optimum log file size? Also, sometimes the archive log files generated are much smaller, is this because the application caused a checkpoint?
