Locking during validation of existing (or creation of new) check constraints

Oracle 11.2.0.4

I'm looking to create a new check constraint on a fairly large table and I can't find a document that clearly lays out what locks are obtained and held during this process.

Can anyone either point me at a doc that explains what locks are required during the validation, or explain it?
