Loading JDK 1.5.0 onto AMD 64 laptop

I'm new to java, so, pardon my ignorance...
Can an AMD 64 laptop run the 32 bit software?
I just switched from 32 bit pc to 64 bit laptop. The SDK was functioning on the PC.
I have downloaded the 32 bit JDK to the laptop and set the path off the Control Panel (Windows XP Home).
Running javac at command results in "javac not recognized as an internal or external command". The references I see in the documentation for AMD 64 reference "servers". Do I download the 64 server software to the laptop?
