Loading Java Applet failed...

Sorry if this is not where I'm suppose to do this, but i have had no success whatsoever in trying to get browser to view applets at all.

Windows XP SP1, mozilla firefox and IE6, latest java from java.com (offline install)

When I view a page with an applet in it, a red "x" appears in the top left corner and my status bar says "Loading Java Applet failed...". This happens for both firefox and IE6.

I'm behind a router, is this the problem? Can someone plz help? Thx so much.
