Listener crashes with 9i (9.0.1.1.1) on Win XP Pro

I'm having problems with the TNSListener process on a 9.0.1.1.1 installation under Windows XP Pro:- when the listener is TNSPINGed or touched by SQL*Plus it crashes. This is a vanilla install of 9i (re-installed several times) and occurs with enterprise, standard and personal editions.

I've searched on the web and found one other guy out there with the same problem, but I've seen no resolution.

Are these known problems for 9i on XP Pro?
Are there any fixes or workarounds available?
