linux disk maintenance

Thanks for your extreme help. Now I faces a problem with OEL5.5 64 bit disk maintenance. When I provide e2fsck -p /dev/sda after logging into single user mode, it ends with an error message stating that e2fsck: Device or resource busy while trying to open /dev/sda. File system mounted or opened exclusively by another programme?. I tried with giving e2fsck -p /dev/sda2,but the error message is same. Again I tried after booting using Linuxknoppix with the command e2fsck -p /dev/sda2, but the error message remains.I tried also with Linux rescue without any effect.Could you please help me on this issue.Thanks in advance.
