Linked Oracle tables in Access giving error ORA-02041

Using Oracle 8i and Oracle ODBC driver 8.01.07.00 I can link oracle tables to Access as read only.
Opening

If I attempt to link the table as writeable I get error ORA-02041 implying a ransaction has not been started.

Any ideas of how to overcome this.
