libjli.so error in linux

I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 release and I downloaded JDK 6 but when I try and run javac or any other utility I get the following error.

javac: error while loading shared libraries: libjli.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

The file is located in /jdk1.6.0_06/jre/lib/amd64/jli

but it seems that javac isn't looking where it is supposed to.

Any help would be great!
