LDAP ERROR (50): Insufficient access

I've been troubleshooting some intermittent login problems that people have been having lately and thus far I really haven't found out what the problem is. I have, however, found that ldaplist doesn't behave properly on several systems:
# ldaplist passwd
ldaplist: Object not found (LDAP ERROR (50): Insufficient access.)
...however, on similarly configured systems (6 of them, in fact) I get the same error. LDAP authentication with netgroups works on all of the afflicted servers, but this error message doesn't give me a good feeling.
Anyone know why this is?
