Keyboard Control in Sun OS 5.9

Hi guys,
I am a beginner, when it comes to unix.
I need to know how to control the keyboard on my desktop while working with Solaris. Right now, when I type something and want to use the "backspace" or the "Arrow" keys to move the cursor back, I see ^?^?[[D^
