JVM locked up - thread dump does not proceed

843829Feb 15 2006 — edited Jun 19 2006
Hello,

We're getting into a situation where the JVM locks up and becomes unresponsive. The lockup occurs after RMI call is serviced; however, the RMI call is successful and returns to the client but after this the JVM seems to be locked up. No RMI calls are accepted and internal timer based processing does not occur either.

When an attempt is made to perform a thread dump (using ctrl-break), the thread dump task begins in the JVM (as seen by the thread count on the java process at the o/s level - Windows XP) but the thread dump seems to be blocked. Each subsequent attempt to do a thread dump adds to the JVM thread count but does not complete. GC still seem to be occuring in this locked up state as when enough thread are started (by doing ctrl-break) GC will occur. There is no CPU use in the locked up state (other then when processing thread dump or doing GC).

What could cause the JVM to get into this condition where everyting including thread dump seems to get blocked?
