Jumbo Frames for the cluster interconnect

422209Aug 8 2007 — edited Aug 8 2007
Hi,

I've quite often seen a recommendation to use jumbo frames for the interconnect in RAC clusters and setting the NIC/switch MTU to 9000 rather than 1500. (along with all the other stuff about setting udp parameters properly, full duplex etc..)

Seems to make perfect sense to me with a block size of 8k for example it will go in one trip.

I realise not everything makes it into the install docs but it seems odd that something that appears to be such no brainer isn't mentioned.

Any ideas why I'd not want to configure this in a new build? I guess you'd maybe only see the difference when the interconnect was starting to suffer with an MTU of 1500 perhaps - and I suppose some reduction of system cpu is may be gained - but what have peoples experiences been with jumbo frames on RAC.

Is it a case of " if you can then you should"?

Thanks,

Tim
