JTextField that dont react to keyboard events

i created an an Autocomplate TextField
the text field can have 2 state.
ONE:
you can keep typing ,no meter if there are no results
in the textField

TWO:
you cant type if there are no result...

how can i tell a textfield to not react to the keyboard events..
for now i am deleting the last character..
witch not look very nice..
how can i do it without deleting the last character..
just tell the textfield to do nothing for this keyEvent..?
