JSP: are they obsolete? where to start?

843789Jan 12 2010 — edited Mar 24 2010
The title says all: i'm focusing in web development of dynamic web pages, and I know java a bit, so I'd like to use JSP rather than PHP.

BUT.
I have some doubts.

Is this technology obsolete? It's hard to find a recent book on jsp, for example. I see that 'Core Web Programming' is dated 2004, 2nd edition, and there are no newer ones.
Many websites use PHP instead of JSP: what are the advantages of JSP over PHP?
Why is it so hard to find free web hosting for JSP?

Thanks for anyone who will answer!
