jre problem on Suse 8.2 with 9i

When I run ./runInstaller I get
"The Java RunTime Environment was not found at /tmp/OraInstall2003-11-14_09-39-05AM/jre/bin/java. Hence, the Oracle Universal Installer cannot be run.
Please visit http://www.javasoft.com and install JRE version 1.3.1 or higher and try again.
: No such file or directory"

As advised I installed the JRE
"java -version
java version "1.4.1_02"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.1_02-b06)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.1_02-b06, mixed mode)"

but get the same message.

Searching this forum I could not find the answer to the problem. Any help?

What I particularily not understand is that the directory mentioned in the error message is created by the installer but it expects that a previously installed JRE is already there???
