JRE 1.5.0_01-b08 vs. 1.5.0-b64

I'm experiencing some problems when switching from JVM 1.5.0-b64 to 1.5.0_01-b08.

Specifically, I installed the JVM as a plug-in to IE 6.0, and I'm accessing an applet's functionality through a swing-based GUI. The GUI is much less responsive to mouse-generated events when running on 1.5.0_01-b08 than 1.5.0-b64.
JVM developers: does the patch involve changes in event handling?

I now need to rollback to a working environment.
*** How do I obtain a stand-alone executable to install JVM 1.5.0-b64 plug-in? ***
Apparently, java.sun.com only provides the most recent JVM version.

I would also appreciate hints to reliably force IE (and Mozilla Firefox...) to auto-download a specific Java plug-in.
