JFileChooser Ridiculously Slow

It takes about 10-20 seconds to load the JFileChooser and about 5 - 10 seconds to browse directories, this surly can not be correct.
Could any one please advice me as to what may be wrong?

JRE 1.6.0_02 and JDK 1.6.0_02
