JDK 1_4_1 After an apparently correct installation the PC is "freezing"

After having apparently succesfully installed the j2sdk-1_4_1_01-windows-i586 the following happen :

I can load succesfully a Java2 application ex. ArgoUML, NetBeans, JBuilder ecc

but when I EXIT from the application it closes but in a few seconds all the PC activities are freezed also the mouse/keyboard and I need to restart everything.

This should not happen ?

The OP is Windows 2000.
