Jdeveloper, SOA Suite - Which versions work best for SOADEMO & development?

446566Apr 30 2009 — edited May 5 2009
Hi All
Have a question on which versions to use as seem to be having issues with Jdev and also seen various issues on this forum to do with various versions of SOA/ Jdev. What is the recommended version to use from a practical perspective. I am using this environment to test things for myself only so no production version compatibility concerns.

Installed and using:
jdeveloper 10.1.3.1 on Vista Ultimate (32 bit) - 2GB Ram, dual processor
SOA Suite 10.1.3.1 on Oracle Enterprise Linux 4 (Update 5)

In Jdev >Help >About gives: Studio Edition Version 10.1.3.1.0.3984

Looking at:
SOADEMO downloaded from technet at http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/soa/index.html.

I choose to download and install the 10.1.3.1 versions as on the download page above it does say:
'Oracle SOA Order Booking demo for SOA Suite 10g Release 3 (10.1.3.1.0)' so I started with these versions.

Had also seen issues with using 10.1.3.4 to deploy various things to SOA suite so went with earlier version.

All installed ok and I have tested different things in the demo, used ESB and BPEL etc etc and all seems to be mostly ok.

One problem I have is with Jdev. Not sure if this is because I am using it on Vista or not. Now I have seen a fair few posts in the forum on perfomance/ issues with Jdev and things to try to resolve them but they do not seem to making any difference. Here are a couple of examples:

1) JSF not showing correctly in Design view.
Some show for a short while, others only show as boxes or just blank. I get different things happening here. If I open the login.jsp under App Navigator

SOADEMO-CLIENT/UserInterface/Web Content/login.jsp

this shows ok.

If I then look at something else for a few minutes I go back to login.jsp and open it again and it shows as boxes. I close jdev and re-open as suggested by some posts and it is there again. I can't keep closing and re-opening every 5 minutes though.

Other jsps such as

SOADEMO-CLIENT/UserInterface/Web Content/retailclient.jsp

always show as boxes even I open this as soon as I open Jdev. It has never shown design view correctly. I have seen a lot of different causes for this one on technet/ metalink.

2) When I navigate in App Navigator scrolling up and down for example, some of the items showing become 'smudged', especially at top and bottom of navigator window. It takes a second or so for them to display correctly. This also happens if I open a java file for example and have to scroll to the right and left to read a long line in the editor.

I have tried using jdk1.5.0_05 and also jdk1.5.0_06 in case this makes any difference. 2 separate places on technet refer to different versions to use.

There is always about 900MB of the 2GB free on my laptop so does not seem to be memory related.

Before spending too much more time on this, does anyone have a recommended version level to use for Jdev and SOA Suite from their own experience?

Appreciate any comments on versions to use

Thanks Cel
