Java Database Connectivity (JDBC)

I am trying to access a PGSQL DB via JDBC and have had no success. My environment is as follows:
RH9 (kernel 2.4.20)
j2sdk1.4.2_01
PostgreSQL 7.3.4

I have tried accessing the DB via the psql.java app provided by PGSQL with no success. Any other attempts with other java progs does not work either. The URL's that have been tried so far to access the DB have been:
jdbc:postgresql://localhost:5432/db
jdbc\:postgresql\://localhost/db
jdbc:postgresql:db

The driver being called to is:
org.postgresql.Driver

The classpath and other env var's are as follows:

The postgresql.jar compiled from source has been copied to the following dir's:
/dspace/lib/
/j2sdk1.4.2_01/jre/lib/ext
/lib/
Its even in the classes dir.
In the tomcat dir and common/lib, common/classes, shared/lib, shared/classes dir.

The error I keep getting is:

Anyone have any ideas how I can solve this and know what exactly Im doing wrong or missing here?
