javaw.exe error

I was trying to install some software on my computer with a CD. About half way through the installation I get the following error message:

javaw.exe has encountered a problem & needs to close

Then it closes and that is the end of the installation. Any ideas what is causing this problem? This is the only time I have ever seen it. The computer is new and I am using Windows XP.
