JavaMail does not work with DNS with only MX records but no A record...?

I used JavaMail to send email to an DNS entry (SMTP server) with only MX record but without A record. I am getting unknown host exception all the time. Does anyone have any ideas what I did wrong or if the DNS defined wrong ( need A record )?
