javac not recognized in windows xp

I am new to java and am taking a java class in college. I installed the sdk and even the software from my java text book. I cannot however get java to work. I keep trying javac but get unrecognized command error. I have set the path variable in windows xp to C:\>C:\j2sdk1.4.0_01\bin\javac.exe I have also added .java and .class to the pathtext variable in windows. I cannot figure this out. Someone please help me.
