javac command - Windows XP

I've just installed Java and I'm trying to execute a piece of code. Whenever I use the command prompt to type javac <filename>.java I get the following message:

'javac' is not recognised as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file

Does anyone know what I've done wrong? Please help!
