New to Java

I am not a Java user as such, but obviously some of the programs I use are.
Every two or three days I get the 'Java updater' aplet popping up on my screen when I turn on my computer.
I have clicked "OK" to install the update, and proceeed using my programs.
a day or so later, the process is repeated. This has been gouing on for months.
I cannot believe that Java needs such frequent updating on my computer, and cannot find anywhere to get assistance for this problem.
If anybody has any ideas about this, or can direct me somewhere for a resolution I would appreciate your help,
