Java(TM) Update cannot retrieve version information from the targeted direc

I get an error message: "Java(TM) Update cannot retrieve version information from the targeted directory." when installing the javaVM 1.4.2_04. I get this trying to install sdk online/offline versions and jre online/offline versions. Tried going back to my older 1.4.2_02 but it's uninstallable too! I've tried deleting any registry entries relating to sun/sun java. Also deleted all java related stuff in my documents and settings folders. I'm using windows 2000 and all latest windows update stuff.
